Soft architecture in wool. On a snowy-white Beni Ourain ground, heathered mauve and plum shapes rise like towers and arches – a bold, contemporary composition softened by the natural texture of hand-knotted Atlas wool.

Why you'll love it

  • Modern art for the floor that still feels warm and handmade.
  • A rare palette – mauve and white bring a gentle romance that works with grey, greige and warm wood.
  • Plush, springy pile of natural sheep wool, beautiful under bare feet.

Style it

Anchor a bedroom with linen bedding in oat and blush, or pair it with a cream sofa, smoked-glass tables and a vintage brass lamp in the living room.

The heritage of Beni Ourain rugs

Beni Ourain is the name of a confederation of Amazigh (Berber) tribes living in the cold, high valleys of the Middle Atlas. For generations, the women of these communities wove thick, deep-pile rugs from the wool of their own sheep, rugs used as bedding and blankets during snowy winters as much as floor coverings.

The classic palette is the natural ivory of undyed wool, drawn with dark brown or black lines. Diamonds, lozenges and zigzags are the most common motifs; weavers worked them from memory, so no two rugs are identical and small asymmetries are a mark of the hand, not a flaw.

In the twentieth century, modernist architects and designers brought Beni Ourain rugs into European and American interiors, where their soft texture and graphic lines became a signature of mid-century and minimalist design.
