What we check before listing a rug
- It is made entirely by hand: knots visible on the back, warp threads forming the fringe.
- We measure it by hand and give the real size in feet and centimeters.
- We note the region or style, the pile height, the material and, for vintage pieces, the approximate age.
- We photograph it in daylight, front and back, with close-ups of the wool and of any wear or repair.
Every rug ships with a card stating its style, origin, size and materials.
What is normal in a handmade rug
- Irregular edges and size: hand-weaving is never perfectly straight. This is a sign of a real handmade rug.
- Shedding: new wool rugs shed loose fibers for the first weeks. It slows down with regular vacuuming.
- Natural smell: real sheep wool can smell slightly of lanolin when unrolled. Air it out for a few days and it fades.
- Abrash: subtle color variations from different batches of wool or dye. Collectors value it.
Caring for your rug
- Vacuum once a week with suction only, no beater bar, and never on the fringe.
- Use a rug pad on hard floors to stop slipping and reduce wear.
- Rotate the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean cloth and cold water; never rub.
- For a deep clean every 1 to 3 years, use a professional hand-wash rug cleaner, not a steam cleaner.
