Short answer: a real Beni Ourain rug is hand-knotted in thick, mostly undyed sheep wool. Turn it over: you should see every knot on the back, slightly irregular, with the pattern visible from behind. The fringe is the end of the rug's own warp threads, not a strip sewn on. Machine-made copies have a perfectly regular grid on the back, a stiff latex or canvas backing, and synthetic fibers that feel smooth and shiny.
1. Look at the back
This is the most reliable test. On a hand-knotted rug the back is a mirror of the front: you can read the design, and the rows of knots are slightly uneven. A machine-made or hand-tufted rug often has a glued backing, a cloth covering or a perfectly regular stitch pattern.
2. Check the fringe
On a Beni Ourain the fringe is the continuation of the warp, the vertical threads the rug was woven on. Gently part the pile at the end of the rug: the fringe should run straight into the body of the rug. A fringe sewn or glued to the edge is a sign of a machine-made rug.
3. Feel the wool
Real Beni Ourain wool is thick, springy and slightly matte, with a natural lanolin feel. Polyester and acrylic copies feel slippery, look shiny and often build static. If a seller cannot tell you the material, ask.
4. Expect irregularity
Lines that wander, diamonds of different sizes, edges that are not perfectly straight and a rug that is a little wider at one end: these are signs of hand-weaving, not defects. A perfectly symmetrical rug with crisp machine edges is not a traditional Beni Ourain.
5. Check the weight and pile
Beni Ourain rugs are heavy for their size because of the dense wool, and the pile is usually deep, often 2 to 4 cm (about 1 to 1.5 inches). A thin, light rug sold as Beni Ourain is usually a different style or a copy.
6. Smell it
A new wool rug can smell faintly of sheep wool when it is unrolled. That smell fades after a few days of airing. Synthetic rugs smell of chemicals or nothing at all.
7. Look at the price
A large hand-knotted wool rug represents weeks or months of work. If an 8x10 "Beni Ourain" costs less than a few hundred dollars, it is almost certainly machine-made, often outside Morocco. Permanent "70% off" prices are another warning sign.
What we do at Yass Rugs
We photograph the back of every rug, give the exact size in feet and centimeters, and state the material and region in each listing. Browse our Beni Ourain rugs, or ask us for a video of any piece.
